Freedom of Speech is a fundamental right. The people behind our constitution had the right idea when they were drafting the most important document for our country.
Cut to present times, things have changed and not all the change is for the good. Increasingly, our media, print, digital or most recently, web streaming apps, is losing its independence. This means it’s losing its voice.
If these are all moderated and their moves are continuously monitored, they will eventually become spokesmen of the government. What does that mean? Simply put, they will be crippled to the point where they won’t be able to speak out against the government.
Press and the judiciary must remain independent, else, we may as well say goodbye to democracy and condition ourselves to live in a modern monarchy. Meaning, we accept regression and forget progress.
The signs of regression are all over, if only we opened our eyes and REALLY looked. The support for Love Jihad and Victim Shaming in rape cases on social media are proof enough.
Absence of a free rein for the press and judiciary simply means that the reigning government becomes all powerful, something that goes against the very fundamentals of democracy. A democracy is more bottom-up than top-down, it must be by the people and for the people.
